What is AI Tutor?
An AI tutor is a software assistant that answers student questions on demand, grounded in the course's own content. Unlike asking a generic chatbot, an AI tutor pulls from the teacher's lessons, the curriculum, and approved sources — so explanations match how the student is being taught and align with what the class has covered.
Why it matters
Students need help between classes. The teacher is asleep at 10pm when the homework gets confusing. The traditional answer was: figure it out, wait until next class, or ask a parent who may not know the material. ChatGPT changed that, but generic chatbots can fabricate answers and explain in framings the student hasn't learned. An AI tutor grounded in the actual course content gives correct answers in the framing the student is being taught.
Key characteristics
- Grounded in the teacher's lessons (not the open internet)
- 24/7 availability — answers questions on the student's schedule
- Explains step-by-step, not just final answers
- Generates practice problems aligned with the current topic
- Reflects the teacher's framing, vocabulary, and rubric
- Surfaces students who are struggling so teachers can intervene
What it's not
An AI tutor in a well-designed LMS is not ChatGPT in a sidebar. The grounding matters: a generic chatbot has no context for what the student has been taught, may answer questions the teacher hasn't covered yet, and can fabricate. A real AI tutor refuses to go outside the course material's scope.
