TL;DR — Moodle is a powerful open-source LMS with the largest plugin ecosystem in education. SEKSAAHUB is a hosted, AI-native platform with a built-in Education CRM, live classes, and native mobile apps. If you have IT staff and want full control, choose Moodle. If you want to teach instead of administer a server, choose SEKSAAHUB.
Cambodian schools, tutoring centers, and NGOs that want to teach online almost always end up comparing two options: install Moodle on a server, or sign up for a hosted platform like SEKSAAHUB. Both can deliver courses, run quizzes, and track grades. They differ in almost everything else.
This article is written by the team behind SEKSAAHUB, but we have tried to be fair — Moodle is genuinely excellent for the right use case, and recommending it over our own product when it fits better is the only way this comparison is useful to you.

Setup time and total cost of ownership
The headline price is the easiest number to compare. The real cost of running an LMS is rarely the license.
SEKSAAHUB. Sign up, create your organization, invite your students, and create your first class — most schools have a live classroom within 15 minutes. Your first 30 days are free with full access to every feature except the marketplace. After that, you pay a monthly subscription scaled to your student and educator count. There is no server, no plugin to install, no database backup to schedule.
Moodle. Moodle itself is free under the GPL license, but a working Moodle deployment is not. You will need a Linux server (USD $20–$100/month for a small school), database backups and security patches handled by someone competent, plugin installation and conflict management for features like BigBlueButton or AI grading, a theme developer if you want it to look like your school, and an admin who can debug a slow query when 300 students hit the gradebook at once.
If you have an IT person, this is workable and probably cheaper than any SaaS over five years. If you do not, the "free" part of Moodle gets expensive very quickly when something breaks during an exam.
AI features Moodle doesn't have
Moodle was designed in the early 2000s as a pedagogical tool — its core is course structure, activities, and the gradebook. Generative AI is being added through plugins and the new Moodle AI Connector, but the experience is patchwork. SEKSAAHUB was designed with AI as part of the foundation.
- AI quiz generation. Paste a lesson, a PDF, or a YouTube transcript into SEKSAAHUB and you get a complete, editable quiz in under a minute. Moodle has plugins that do parts of this, but you will configure each one separately.
- AI auto-grading. Multiple choice and true/false graded instantly. For short answer and essay, AI scores each submission, suggests a grade, and writes feedback. Teachers review and approve. Paid Moodle plugins approximate this; they are not standard.
- AI tutor for students. SEKSAAHUB ships a 24/7 AI tutor grounded in the teacher's own course material. Moodle has no equivalent.
- AI lesson summaries and transcripts. Live class recordings are automatically transcribed and summarized. Moodle's BigBlueButton plugin records but does not summarize.

What Moodle does better
Pretending Moodle has no strengths would be dishonest. There are real cases where Moodle is the right answer:
- Full data sovereignty. For research universities, government education programs, and NGOs with strict data residency rules, self-hosting matters.
- Mature plugin ecosystem. Roughly 2,000 community plugins covering biometric attendance, certificate generation, specialized question types. SEKSAAHUB has a focused product with no third-party plugins.
- SCORM, xAPI, and LTI today. If your school depends on these e-learning standards now, Moodle is the safer choice.
- IT staff and a long horizon. Self-hosted Moodle is genuinely cheaper over five years if you have capable admins.
- Research-grade gradebook. Weighted categories, custom scales, outcomes-based grading. SEKSAAHUB's gradebook is more opinionated and simpler.
If two or more of the above describe your school, Moodle is probably your best option, and you should not switch to SEKSAAHUB.
What SEKSAAHUB does better
For everyone else — Cambodian K–12 schools, tutoring centers, NGO learning programs, sports and music coaches, and small academies — SEKSAAHUB was designed around the operational reality of running a small education business in 2026:
- Built-in Education CRM. Track inquiries, run trial classes, follow up with parents, and convert leads to enrolled students — in the same system that runs the classes. Moodle has no equivalent; you will run a spreadsheet or pay for HubSpot alongside it. See why spreadsheets aren't enough.
- Native mobile apps. Live classes, lessons, quizzes, AI tutor — all on iOS and Android. Moodle's mobile app is dense and built for university students.
- Khmer language first. SEKSAAHUB is built in Cambodia. UI, AI tutor, and quiz generation work natively in Khmer.
- Live classes that just work. One click starts an HD live class. Another click records it. The recording is transcribed and summarized automatically.
- Local support. When something breaks during an exam in Phnom Penh at 8 PM, you call Seksaa Tech.
Migrating from Moodle to SEKSAAHUB
If you are currently on Moodle and considering switching, migration is usually straightforward for small and mid-sized schools:
- Export students from Moodle as CSV (Site administration → Users → Bulk user actions).
- Export courses as Moodle Backup .mbz files.
- Export quiz banks from each course.
- Send the files to the Seksaa Tech onboarding team for import.
- Recreate live class schedules and re-upload recordings.
- Run SEKSAAHUB and Moodle in parallel for two weeks while teachers and students adapt.
Most schools complete migration in 1–2 weeks of part-time work. Schools with under 500 students typically do it in a long weekend.
Recommendation
Pick Moodle if: you have dedicated IT staff, you need plugin extensibility, you require SCORM/xAPI/LTI today, you run a university or research program, or your governance rules require self-hosting.
Pick SEKSAAHUB if: you are a school, tutoring center, NGO, or coach in Cambodia or Southeast Asia, you want AI grading and AI tutor as built-in features, you need an Education CRM, your students will use mobile more than web, and you want Khmer language support that actually works.
Most schools in Cambodia fall into the second group. That is the gap SEKSAAHUB was built to fill.

Frequently asked questions
Is Moodle really free?
The Moodle software is free under the GPL license. Running Moodle is not — you pay for hosting, maintenance, and admin time. For small schools without IT staff, the practical total cost is often higher than a hosted SaaS.
Can SEKSAAHUB import a Moodle backup file directly?
Not yet automatically. The Seksaa Tech onboarding team handles Moodle .mbz imports manually for new customers.
Does SEKSAAHUB support SCORM or xAPI?
Not in the current version. If your school depends on SCORM-packaged content today, Moodle is the safer choice.
Can I run SEKSAAHUB on my own server?
No. SEKSAAHUB is a hosted SaaS on AWS in ap-southeast-1 (Singapore). If self-hosting is a hard requirement, Moodle is the right choice.
Does SEKSAAHUB work in Khmer?
Yes. UI, AI tutor, and AI quiz generation all support Khmer natively.
How long does the SEKSAAHUB free trial last?
30 days from the day your organization is created, with full access to every feature except the marketplace. No credit card is required.
